(WIP 2) Italian Horseman, 14th Century

Rendering of the main areas of the bust is completed. Sans some tweaking at the final stage.

I was not able to find some decent references for the tunic worn under the leather /chain armour. Decided on a green (which is the complementary of red) tone. Worked out pretty well. Mixture of Olive Green & Sap Green. Glazed Hooker's Green into the recesses.

Will be working on the mace and helmet next. There's a shield which the knight has slung over the shoulder. That will require some research to find a suitable (ie not too challenging to paint) motif :)

(WIP 1) Italian Horseman, 14th Century

Happy New Year !

Starting the year with a subject from a different period.

This project is for a 14th Century Italian Horseman. Outfitted in chainmail and decorated cuir-bouilli (hardened leather), mace and helmet in hand, this is a veteran from the famed Compagnia di San Giorgio (Company of Saint George, name of mercenary company in 14th century)

For this face, I went with a slightly reddish tone to bring out the ferocity of this battle hardened horseman.

Update: Included a recent WIP photo of the chainmail and cuir-bouilli. Trying to achieve a gold like effect on the branch like motif with non metallic colors.

(Completed) RAF Bomber Command, WW2

This will be my last bust for 2014.

A challenging yet rewarding bust to work on. Painting the textures on the various accessories was time consuming but the additional dimension it brought to the bust made it worthwhile :)

(WIP 3) RAF Bomber Command, WW2

Approaching the finish line for this bust. Some straps and buckles to paint and attach.

Overall I enjoyed bringing this bust to life. The different materials & fabrics gave me an opportunity to experiment and try different methods.

Just note the oxygen mask and the oxygen hose are cast as separate pieces and should be pinned together. The oxygen hose also needs to be bent into shape. Likewise the cable from the mouthpiece of the oxygen masks needs to be bent and connect to the intercom cables.

Getting back into the groove. Lots of interesting textures and fabrics to experiment on :)

(WIP 1) RAF Bomber Command, WW2

An older looking Brad Pitt :)

A slight variation to the flesh mix. I added some French Blue & Olive Green to the shadow areas.
